Description: 1958 Press Photo Portland Zoo's Penguin Hector Reads about Disease - nox45922 This is an original press photo. Portland Oregon, January 11 - Aspergillosis? What's that? - Hector, the educated Adelie, looks shocked at what he reads in the medical journal. Eleven of Hector's fellow penguins have died here of Apergillosis, a lung infection, and Hector himself was found lying half dead when he was revived by a shot of new amphotericin drug. He was one of a group of 67 penguins brought here by plane from Antarctica. Dr. W.J.L. Sladen of Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore, Maryland, was flown here to aid in saving the remainder of the birds. The ice ax and rope? How else would a penguin get up on a high sofa? Photo measures 8 x 10 inches. Photo is dated 01-11-1958.
