The jet comes to ancient Lebanon - Beirut, a mere seven hours flying time from Copenhagen by Scandinavian Airlines System's recently introduced Caravelle jetliners, is a delightful melange of the new and the old. High on its list of must sights is nearby Ballbek which, legend says, was an important oasis "before the Deluge." Later on, the Phoenicians built a temple there in honor of their god, Baal. When the Greeks arrived with Alexander the Great, they identified Ball-Hadad with their own sun god and renamed the city Heliopolis, or the City of the Sun. Inevitably, the Romans followed the Greeks and Ballbek entered its greatest period. Fired by an ambition to outdo the magnificence of Rome, its citizens constructed enormous temples to Jupiter, Bacchus and Venus, transporting the materials by ship and by land over a 5000 foot pass. You can realize something of the magnitude of their task when you consider that the colonnade of the Temple of Jupiter alone consisted of 54 columns, each almost 66 feet tall and over 7 feet in diameter. Photo measures 8.25 x 10.5inches. Photo is dated 07-24-1959. PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: sax27411 Sell Smarter with Kyozou.Inventory and Ecommerce Management
