Founded in 1837, it served the area between New York and Washington in the east to Chicago and St. Louis in the west, with most of its trackage concentrated in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The PARR competed head-to-head with the New York Central (NYC) in many markets; after World War II, as passenger traffic began to dwindle and operating costs rose, the PARR began having difficult financial times. In a survival move, the PARR and NYC merged to form the Penn Central in 1968; this move was not successful either, and in 1976 the US government took over this line, and other eastern regional railroads, to form Conrail. Conrail was sold to Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1999, and the surviving PARR trackage is now operated primarily by these two railroads. For auction is a passenger train timetable dated February 11, 1962. It contains listings for all passenger trains operated by the PARR, to include those run in conjunction with other railroads. The timetable is organized by routes. There are listings for trains between Chicago-Indianapolis-Florida; between Chicago-Washington-New York; between St. Louis-Indianapolis-Dayton-New York; between Nashville-Louisville-Cincinnati-Columbus-New York; between Chicago-Youngstown-New York; between New York-Roanoke; between Chicago-Pittsburgh; between St. Louis-Indianapolis-Columbus-Pittsburgh; between Chicago-Indianapolis-Louisville; between Chicago-Dayton-Columbus; between Chicago-Richmond-Cincinnati-Norfolk; between Pittsburgh-Washington-New York; between Washington-New York-Montreal; between New York-Philadelphia; between Buffalo-Erie-Washington-New York; and for New Jersey seashore services. Included with each set of listings are equipment manifests. There is a 2-page centerpage map of the PARR system and maps of railroad station locations in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington. There are tables of fares for both coach and Pullman services. This timetable measures appx 9x4 inches unopened and contains 40 pages; it is printed on medium-weight paperstock. It is in excellent condition, even for something now 50 years old. There are no writings or markings, no spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place. There are two small tears, one of appx 1/2 inches on the cover fold edge, and one of about 1/4 inches on the back cover page; otherwise, I can identify no other rips or tears. This is a great collectible for the PARR railfan. Pictures sell! Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.300+ Listing Templates! Auctiva gets you noticed! The complete eBay Selling Solution.
