Description: "Alfred Natanson and His Wife, 1900" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "This spirited portrait belongs to the period when Vuillard's friendship with the whole Natanson family was at its closest. Alfred, one of the Natanson brothers, sons of a rich banker, had married the actress Marthe Mellot. The couple is portrayed in a casual, lively conversational duet more suggestive of a snapshot than of a lengthily pondered study. Vuillard derived this "modern" approach to sitters from the example of Degas, whom he greatly admired, and added his own intimist way of looking acutely at sitters. Nothing could be simpler, or stronger, than the dark patterning of contours and furniture against the whitewashed wall, an unusually severe scheme for Vuillard, who normally reveled in a profusion of soft, subtle colors. Turning, while making a remark to his amused wife, Alfred shows no more than an animated profile, vanishing as the head turns--that age-old convention in portraiture known as the "profil perdu." The double portrait is a discreet and charming souvenir of affectionate intimacy between the two of them and also reflects Vuillard's close involvement with these prized friends, and theirs with him." Unique and distinctive. Suitable for framing. *All prints are book plates / pages that are professionally removed from an original published book or other type of publication.
