Description: "Portrait of Lugne Poe, 1891" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "Few persons were more fortunate than Vuillard in his friends, who, as one of them wrote, 'opened and closed his horizons.' Utterly devoted to him, they constantly stood at hand to cheer him when his spirits faltered, to urge him forward when diffidence held him back, or simply to find commissions for him or sell his pictures. Vuillard needed dynamic impresarios and never failed to find them. Outstanding among his earlier champions was Lugné-Poë (1869–1940), actor, producer, and director (1893) of the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre, which largely introduced the work of foreign playwrights to French audiences and encouraged new dramatists as well as new forms of dramatic art and production. Lugné had been Vuillard's schoolmate at the Lycée Condorcet and shared a studio with him in 1891 when this witty portrait was painted. In it Vuillard applies Nabi aesthetic principles with extreme rigor: deep space is nonexistent; areas of strong, flat color obey a pronounced rhythmic pattern bearing little more than a decorative relationship to the con- tours of the sitter; and the portrait symbolizes Lugné's intense youthful drive rather than portraying him literally. He must have been a formidable young man, both 'querulous and fierce,' as André Gide described him, "someone who gave the impression that his foot had just been trodden upon." Unique and distinctive. Suitable for framing. *All prints are book plates / pages that are professionally removed from an original published book or other type of publication.
