According to a 1977 North Carolina General Assembly Joint Resolution the New York Yankees traveled from their spring training camp to Chapel Hill at great expense to the owners in order to honor Tar Heel baseball coach Walter Rabb, who was retiring after 31 seasons, and to promote college baseball. The Yankees were the first major league team to visit Chapel Hill since 1901, and subsequently played exhibition games against the Tar Heels in 1979 and 1981. Of note, George Steinbrenner's daughter Jenny was a student at UNC and graduated in 1981. Her husband, Stephen Swindal (a Yankees General Partner at one time) was also a UNC graduate. The Yankees won the Saturday, April 2, 1977 exhibition 8-1 in front of 9,000 spectators at Boshamer Stadium along with North Carolinians watching on the University of North Carolina Television Network. This was the year the Yankees won the 1977 World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers. There is wear of the corners and spine, a front cover stain, back cover tanning, and staple rusting.
