William Theodore “Bill” Walton III (November 5, 1952-) is often considered one of the greatest college basketball players in history, winning two NCAA Championships as well as two NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player Awards, two Helms Foundation College Player of the Year Awards, three Naismith College Player of the Year Awards, three USBWA and Sporting News Player of the Year Awards and three Consensus NCAA All-American First Team selection. Walton was the leader of the UCLA Bruins back-to-back 30-0 seasons and a key component to the Bruins 88-0 run. The Portland Trailblazers took Bill as the Number 1 overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. The San Diego Conquistadors of the ABA selected him as well. Walton struggled as a professional, suffering injury after injury, before breaking through. In the 1976-77 season leading the Trailblazers to the 1977 NBA Championship. Bill was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player that same year as he led the playoff in games played (19), total rebounds (288), assists (104) and blocks (64) while scoring 364 points. He followed the stellar playoff performance the following season, capturing the 1978 NBA Most Valuable Player Award and was selected to the All-NBA First Team, as well receiving his second consecutive selection to the All-Defensive NBA First team. Walton played only ten seasons in the NBA with the Trailblazers (1974-1978), Sand Diego/Los Angeles Clippers (1979-1985) and Boston Celtics (1985-1987). Named the NBA Sixth Man in 1986, Bill Walton and a cast of future Hall of Famers that included Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, won the NBA Finals over the Houston Rockets. Though his career was marred by injuries limiting him to a mere 468 games, Walton finished his career with 6,215 points, 2,552 field goals, 4,923 total rebounds, 1.034 blocks and 1,590 assists. Bill Walton was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. In 1996, Walton was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Bill went on to have a successful career as a color commentator for various teams and networks after his playing days ended.
