TV - Since its premiere on Sept. 2, 1963, as network television's first daily half-hour evening news broadcast, "The CBS Evening News" has reported on the world's major triumphs and tragedies, featured newsmaking interviews with political leaders, and witnessed nations at war. Walter Cronkite served as anchor and managing editor from 1962, when the broadcast was 15 minutes in length, until March 6, 1981, when he was succeeded by Dan Rather. Here, Cronkite is seen (top left to right) in China during President Nixon's historic visit in 1972, and interviewing President John F. Kennedy on the first 30-minute broadcast of "The CBS Evening News." Rather is pictured (bottom) interviewing Nixon in 1972 and reporting on the war in Vietnam in 1966.Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches.
