Part of a long running series of commemoratives this one was struck at the Hamburg mint in 1984 to honor the 175th anniversary of the birth of Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Known today as just “Felix Mendelssohn”, he was a composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn composed symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. He wrote the melody used in the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing". Mendelssohn's “Songs Without Words” are his most famous solo piano compositions. Weight: 10.00 Grams, 29 Millimeters, Copper-Nickel. Mintage: 8,000,000.
