Description: Vintage Print: "Boat Run Aground on the Beach Near Luderitz" Source: Earth from Above, published in 1999 Image description Title: "Alternating between beaches and reefs, the coast of Namibia, often hidden under a thick layer of fog, is permanently subjected to a strong swell and to violent marine currents. It is therefore a passage feared by navigators sailing by on the way to the Cape of Good Hope. Since 1846 Portuguese seafarers have called 'the sands of hell' and the northern part of the coast was named Skeleton Coast in 1933. The rusted wreckage of dozens of cargo ships, steamships, trawlers, and men-of-war litter the shore; they are sometimes mired in the sand hundreds of yards from the water, as seen here near the city of Luderitz, testifying to the violence of shipwreck. Nearly 6000 ships are destroyed all over the world each year, about half of which are pleasure craft, casing the death of several hundred people."
