Volume Two is limited to 300 copies and is not numbered. Both are signed by Donald W. Carpenter compiler of the diaries. Volume Two is larger and completes the story of his life and seems to be unavailable anywhere (at least at the time of this listing). Illustrated with many historic photos and documents. Both books are indexed for easy to find entries. Excerpt from the beginning of the second volume from the compiler Donald W. Carpenter: James W. Carpenter was born in a log house in Sombra Township on the 23rd of January, 1854. He was the only child of John Carpenter and Harriet Henry. His parents were newcomers to the area when they married on the 17th of January, 1853 at Port Sarnia, Ontario. Harriet, his mother, died on the 26th of August, 1855 and until John Carpenter's remarriage to Elizabeth Ann Henry in 1862, I believe that James was raised, during those early years of his life, with the motherly influence of his Aunt Marilla Carpenter. As a young man, James fell in love with Mary Margaret Poland and they were married at Courtright, Ontario on the 24thof December, 1876. The first edition of the Diary of James W. Carpenter tells of his life's experiences from 1880 to 1894 with some extra diary information around 1900. In that time many tragedies have struck him, including the loss of his beloved wife, "Polly". However with the aid of a "Lonely Hearts" magazine he is able to a new wife and mother for his young children. Volume II will now provide the diaries from the last years of his life in Alpena County.You will note that he writes in his diary up to the day he awakens and suffers a fatal heart attack.
