This type was issued by the "Peoples Bank of China" in 2005. It pictures Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong's rule from 1949 until his death in 1976 in China was marred by several brutal campaigns that resulted in widespread suffering and death. The most devastating of these was the “Great Leap Forward” of 1958 to 1962, a disastrous economic policy that led to a famine estimated to have killed between 15 and 45 million people. Additionally, the “Cultural Revolution” of 1966-1976 saw widespread violence and societal upheaval, with millions persecuted as "enemies of the state". Intellectuals, religious groups, and anyone deemed insufficiently loyal to Mao faced imprisonment, torture, and even execution.
