And even then, its difficult to process wood to be the exact size down to the last millimeter. For this reason, its important to measure all posts. You dont need to measure that entire post, just the edges surrounding the end grain. For the plastic fence post caps to fit, the edges around the posts end grain should be approximately 3 5/8" by 3 5/8". If you need to make adjustments for the plastic caps to fit, ensure that the posts edges wont go beyond the caps 1/2" inner edge/lip.
