About Hei-Tiki: The Tiki is a very ancient symbol considered to be the most popular piece of Maori jewelry, yet it is by far the least understood, so there are numerous legends about its meaning. The Tiki is a talisman to the Maori people, and has been regarded as a unisex symbol of good luck since ancient times. Carved into various natural materials, the most valuable tiki's were carved from pounamu, aka "greenstone" (a hard, durable, and highly valued nephrite jade from the South Island of New Zealand), which were handed down through the generations as Taonga (treasured) possessions. It has been suggested that the tiki is the myth form of the first man, created by Tane. However, some doubt this, as the hei-tiki appears to be either female, or sexless.
