The Rebab is the modern version of the ancient Uyghur Pipa. It was invented by a famous Uyghur music teacher, Khaderhan, in XVI century. Khaderhan experimented with the Pipa and Rebab in order to make it easier to hold the Rebab while playing. Historically, the Kuqa Rebab was a 5 stringed instrument with a round head. Documents record that, during the Tang Dynasty, the Uyghur Pipa was played by the master, Pelul (Pei Xinpu) from Kashgar, using a pick. His early playing rules and techniques were accepted by many other nations. So, the ancient Pipa (Barbab) is the ancestor of the 7 Stringed Snake Skin Uyghur Rebab. When Zhouwude defeated the Qing Dynasty in 577 BC., his Uyghur queen, Asina, took her Pipa Master from Kucha along with more than 300 Uyghur musicians, to her palace. There they raised Pipa playing to a new level. In more recent times (1864-1898) the renowned Rebab Master, Tashway, tried very hard to make the Uyghur Rebab more popular. He trained many students and also invented Tashway music. Another Uyghur Rebab Master, Rozek from Atush was also very famous. The Uyghur Rebab master, Dawut Awut, played in other countries and became well respected. He was a very talented musician. The Pipa or Barbab has a dry sound because the bridge rests on wood, whereas, the Uyghur Rebab has a deep and beautiful sound because the bridge rests on high quality snakeskin. Also, the Uyghur Rebab has longer strings compared to the Pipa. Some colleges and universities are teaching the 7-String Snake Skin Uyghur Rebab in Xinjiang and, perhaps also in universities in eastern China. It is becoming a national musical instrument, and some teachers are highly supported by the Chinese goverment.
