Description: This display includes the VINTAGE styles and ranks of the AAA School Safety Patrol program prior to the current style. The badges in the main picture on the left were in use from the 1940’s through the 1960’s. The badges on the right are from the 1970’s. Originally the AAA program was called the SCHOOL BOY PATROL then later changed to the SCHOOL SAFETY PATROL when girls began joining the ranks. The patrolman badge was also replaced with a STAR badge. This set is represents the major ranks PATROLMAN (Silver), SERGEANT (Green), LIEUTENANT (Red) and CAPTAIN (Blue) of the AAA School Safety Patrol. The idea of schoolboy patrols began in 1922 when Charles M. Hayes, then president of the Chicago Motor Club is credited for building the infrastructure and providing the resources so other AAA clubs across the U.S. could protect school-aged children walking to and from school.
