Description: AERIAL VIEW OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND SOUTH CAROLINA POSTCARD Intracoastal Waterway Yachting Fishing Golf Hilton Head Island was part of the Lord Proprietors land grant of 1698. In the 1700's, cotton was raised on the island producing record crops and wide acclaim for the Sea Island cotton. After South Carolina seceded from the Union and shots were fired on Fort Sumter, Hilton Head became the scene of the largest amphibious landing by U.S forces until D-Day. More than 12,000 Union soldiers landed on the Island. After the Civil War, the island's inhabitants included a small population of mostly the descendants of former slaves. They survived modestly on small farms and as hunters and fisherman. Their Gullah culture and language survive today as a living legacy of their strength and perseverance. In the mid 1900's, Charles Fraser, son of one of the families that owned most of the Island, built a bridge to the mainland. After this came the first of the Hilton Head family resorts, Sea Pines Plantation. Sea Pines Plantation became the prototype of the modern resort community and was copied around the world. Even with the development on Hilton Head, much of the landscape remains as it was when 1st sighted from William Hilton’s ship more than 300 years ago as depicted on this postcard.
