Description: Agave americana is a perennial plant in the Asparagaceae family. Its native range is in Mexico and the U.S. Some familiar names are century plant, maguey, or American aloe. Even though it is called a Century plant, it only lives around 10-30 years. It is not an Aloe at all, even though it is called American Aloe. The flowers are edible, with the sweet liquid inside is called honey water. The plant will die after it flowers but produces babies throughout its life. The leaves are used in making mezcal tequila with high alcohol content. It can grow to six feet tall without the Inflorescens and 10 feet wide. The inflorescence can reach 30 feet high and is quite a sight to see. The blue-green leaves have sharp spines on the leaf tips. Hummingbirds, birds, and small mammals are attracted to it. It prefers to grow in full sun in dry sandy soil with little water needs. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
