Description: This Extremely Rare Antique by Alfred J. Frueh original caricature of Julia Marlowe was part of the Pierce Studio Exhibition, held from November 1912 to April 1913. Most of Frueh’s drawings in this exhibition were rendered on cream-colored paper mounted on illustration board, with this particular caricature executed in ink and gouache. His caricature of Marlowe, later revisited for his Stage Folk portfolio published in 1922 with a revised color scheme, depicted her in the role of Juliet in the 1912 New York production of Romeo and Juliet. Due to the age of these original pieces, the paper on which they were created is very sensitive and shows evident signs of aging, including discoloration and fragility, adding to the historical value and delicate nature of the work. Alfred J. Frueh (1880–1968) was a celebrated caricaturist and illustrator, best known for his long association with The New Yorker magazine, to which he contributed from 1925 to 1962. His bold, minimalist style, often using exaggerated forms to capture the essence of his subjects, was highly influential in the world of theatrical caricature. Frueh’s work continues to be appreciated for its humor, elegance, and insight into the personalities of early 20th-century stage performers.
