It is numbered 204/260. The exact age of this vintage litho is not known. Per askART, the artist was born in Mongat, near Barcelona, in Spain. He had artistic proclivities from a young age, and started painting in oils when he was twelve. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge, a prestigious fine art school in Barcelona, from the age of seventeen. He had his first solo exhibition in 1957, before graduation. Alvar was awarded a scholarship to study in Granada for a summer. He won the grand prize in a competition of young painters in Barcelona, and that painting is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern art in that city. Alvar was invited to exhibit in other cities, following his early success. He won another grand prize for his work, for which he received a scholarship to study in Paris. There he met Galerie Drouant director Juan Fuentes. Alvar's Parisian paintings were exhibited at the gallery and they sold out within a week. Alvar briefly returned to Barcelona to marry before moving back to Paris for ten years. In 1962, his works were exhibited for the first time in the United States, at the Monede Gallery of New York City. His first lithographs were produced in 1963 for the Gallerie Drouant. Since that year, he has regularly exhibited in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Japan. Alvar has completed commissions and permanent public installations (murals, sculptures, and paintings) in Spain and France. Several books on his life and work have been published, plus a documentary DVD. Additional information about this artist, one of the last living Modernist artists, is available on Wikipedia.
