SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Andy Weir was born and raised in California. At the age of fifteen he began working as a computer programmer for Sandia National Laboratories. He studied computer science at U.C. San Diego, although he did not graduate. His father is a particle physicist. Andy Weir grew up reading classic science fiction such as the works of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Weir is best known for his debut novel THE MARTIAN. He wrote the book to be as scientifically accurate as possible, including extensive research into orbital mechanics, conditions on Mars, the history of manned spaceflight, and botany. The print version of the novel debuted at #12 on the New York Times bestseller list. The novel has been very well received, including the Wall Street Journal calling it “the best pure science fiction novel in years.” The book is being made into a major Hollywood film, set for a 2015 release. Andy Weir is currently working on his second novel, entitled Zhek. He describes it as “a more traditional sci-fi novel including aliens, telepathy, faster-than-light travel, etc.” SIGNED IN FULL BY ANDY WEIR ON THE COLOPHON PAGE: #107/1000. Geffen Award winner for Best Science Fiction Book. 2015: THE MARTIAN. Ignotus Award winner for Best Foreign Novel. 2015: THE MARTIAN. Seiun Award winner for Best Translated Novel.2015: THE MARTIAN. The novel served as the basis for the superb film of the same name starring Matt Damon,Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Benedict Wong, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Chen Shu, and Eddy Ko. 2016: Andy Weir is honored by being named a John W. Campbell Award winner for Best New Writer. 2018: ARTEMIS. Dragon Award winner for Best Science Fiction Novel. 2018: ARTEMIS. Prometheus Award nominee for Best Novel. 2019: ARTEMIS. Geffen Award winner for Best Science Fiction Book. 2019: ARTEMIS. Seiun Award nominee for Best Translated Novel. 2021: PROJECT HAIL MARY. Dragon Award winner for Best Science Fiction Novel. 2022: PROJECT HAIL MARY. Hugo Award nominee for Best Novel. 2022: PROJECT HAIL MARY. Seiun Award winner for Best Translated Novel. (On a personal note, although I liked Arkady Martine's A DESOLATION CALLED PEACE [the 2022 Hugo Award winner] well enough [although people need to stop calling A MEMORY CALLED EMPIRE and A DESOLATION CALLED PEACE space operas because they are not space operas], PROJECT HAIL MARY is clearly the book that should have won the Hugo Award for 2022. Its science fictional concepts are the newest and most creative that the science fiction genre has seen in many years AND has the best "first contact" scenario that has been imagined in many years. PROJECT HAIL MARY should have also won the Nebula Award for Best Novel for the same reasons noted above). From the dust jacket: “I’m stranded on Mars. I have no way to communicate with Earth. I’m in a Habitat designed to last 31 days. If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So, yeah, I’m screwed. “A saga of courage, ingenuity and humour -- and utterly convincing thanks to superb research. The best space disaster story since Clarke’s A FALL OF MOONDUST. -- Stephen Baxter From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ANDY WEIR has always been fascinated by space travel and like most kids growing up wanted to be an astronaut. Instead, he wrote a book -- THE MARTIAN. Andy hopes this will be the first of many trips into space” From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “Strong, resilient, and gutsy. It’s ROBINSON CRUSOE on Mars, 21st century style.” -- Steve Berry “One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. It feels so real it could almost be non fiction, and yet it has the narrative drive and power of a rocket launch. This is ‘Apollo 13’ times ten. -- Douglas Preston From the first several pages of the book: “The best book I’ve read in ages. Clear your schedule before you crack the seal. This story will take your breath away faster than a hull breach. Smart, funny, and white-knuckle intense, THE MARTIAN is everything you want from a novel.” -- Hugh Howey, Sunday Times bestselling author of WOOL “Think ‘Apollo 13’ . . . on Mars! . . . A saga of courage, ingenuity and humour -- and utterly convincing thanks to superb research. The best space disaster story since Clarke’s A FALL OF MOONDUST.” -- Stephen Baxter “One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time . . . the technology is beautifully researched and based on what is currently envisioned for a manned flight to Mars. It feels so real it could almost be non fiction, and yet it has the narrative drive and power of a rocket launch. This is ‘Apollo 13’ times ten. I could not put this book down.” -- Douglas Preston, New York Times bestselling author of IMPACT and BLASPHEMY “Strong, resilient, and gutsy. It’s ROBINSON CRUSOE on Mars, 21st century style. Set aside a chunk of free time when you start this one. You’re going to need it because you won’t want to put it down.” -- Steve Berry “THE MARTIAN kicked my ass! Weir has crafted a relentlessly entertaining and inventive survival thriller, a MacGyver-trapped-on-Mars tale that feels just as real and harrowing as the true story of Apollo 13.” -- Ernest Cline, New York Times bestselling author of READY PLAYER ONE “A book I just couldn’t put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy . . . reads like ‘MacGyver’ meets MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. -- Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Commander of the International Space Station and author of AN ASTRONAUT’S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH “Gripping . . . shapes up like Defoe’s ROBINSON CRUSOE as written by someone brighter” -- Larry Niven, Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of the RINGWORLD series and LUCIFER’S HAMMER “The tension simply never lets up, from the first page to the last, and at no point does the believability falter for ever a second. You can’t shake the feeling that this could all really happen.” -- Patrick Lee, New York Times bestselling author of THE BREACH and GHOST COUNTRY SIGNED IN FULL BY ANDY WEIR ON THE COLOPHON PAGE: #107/1000. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE to an almost FINE book in an FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its bright red cloth binding with very bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct bright yellow endpapers. There is no writing in the book (except, of course, for Andy Weir’s autograph); no bookplates; no remainder marks. The upper left area of the front board of the book has a smudge/discoloration; largely unobtrusive, but it is there. There is a small wrinkle in the binding towards the top of the spine of the book; unobtrusive. The book came with the smudge and the wrinkle from the publisher; this is still an unread copy of this book. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of £9.99. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. Excellent and certainly to become classic dust jacket artwork by Corbis/Head Design. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT NOVELS TURNED INTO IMPORTANT FILMS 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF ANDY WEIR 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY.
