Batchelder orClaycraft Potteries A number of faience tile makers who originally came from Scotland and England found their way to California by way of the East Coast. These craftsmen joined tileries such as California Art Tile and Claycraft ~ 1921-1939.Tiles created in these California potteries started to look at the West Coast for inspiration but also looked back to the English countryside for inspiration. A leading tile maker Ernest Batchelder (1876-1957) in around 1910 took inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and Henry Chapman Mercer who had founded the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in 1898.Ernest A. Batchelder was a major contributor to the American Arts and Crafts movement in the early 1900s. He moved to Southern California in 1901 from New England and constructed a home in The Arroyo Seco area of Pasadena in 1909. It was here that he built his first kiln where he began producing tiles in 1910.By 1912 he had moved his operation in 1920 to an area near downtown Los Angeles where by 1925 his tile- making production included eleven kilns on seven acres. The tiles he produced were distinguished by muted colors and a soft matte finish. Most of his early commissions were for fireplaces, fountains, front halls and billiard rooms.
