Description: According to the March 29, 1893, issue of the Red Bank Register, George Ovens moved from Albany, New York, to Red Bank, New Jersey, in 1864 and built a plant to make catsup and pepper sauce. When Ovens died in 1866, his son, George C. Ovens, operated the business and changed the name to George C. Ovens & Co. George C. Ovens moved to Chicago ca. 1888, and Ephraim E. Ovens (probably a son or brother) ran the business until the factory burned ca. 1890. I love the old pepper sauce bottles. They were made fancy to attract your attention. They came in many styles but all uniquely identifiable as pepper sauce. This one stands 8 ¼” tall. Starting from a 1 ½” base it rises gracefully and tapers into a wonderful long neck to a double ring lip. The front has the nice cathedral door where the label would go and 3 flowing ribs on all other sides that stop at the indention of the neck. This one is special because it is identified by bold embossing on the base “G.C.O. & CO” which ties it to our history making the bottle early 1890s. It is in dug condition with hazing on the back and the lip is hazy all around. There is this wonderful, jagged glass flaw on the front of the neck. There is no damage. It’s a beautiful thing!
