Description: The large, raised carved gold Chinese characters, I believe, represent the names of a family, sort of like a family tree. I was told this information from a Chinese women who taught Mandarin. I appears to be from the early 1900's and was displayed near the family's resting ground and home. I cannot guarantee these facts, though. I have owned the plaque since 1980 and very much enjoyed its presence in my home. Over the years, some of the red paint has dried and fell off, as you can see in the photos where the areas are white. The painted and rusted metal hook is original. What I love about this artifact is the strength of the characters and the beautiful deep red contrasted with the bright gold leaf, and of course, the history that is silent that I wish I could hear.
