This artefact is part of a large collection that I’m selling to downsize. Rangda is the demon queen of the Leyaks, the character from the classic dance dramas of Bali. It is one of the most famous Bali masked dances of the confrontation between Rangda and the Barong who resembles a Chinese dragon. This mask is from the centuries-old Topeng tradition in Bali and Java where dramatic performances of stories based on the royal courts about kings, princes, heroes, clowns and myths are performed - similar in a way to English Elizabethan dramas. The dance dramas performed on Java and Bali probably originated in ancient rituals honouring the ancestors and for the deities of planting and harvest. Later, Hindu and Islamic religious beliefs added to the richness of the ceremonial stories.
