Description: I've been privileged to own this piece since 2015. I bought from one of my two trusted dealers, this one in England. I have my original paperwork, which includes the provenance, that I'll send to you. The dealer said she didn't expect to ever see another one like this. She stated that the box could be a sewing case, but felt certain it was meant to hold playing cards since ladies of the period loved games and gambling. It is English or French in origin... handmade during the reign of George III. The embroidery and ribbon-work is on a wine colored silk faille fabric covering a blue paper lined card or vellum structure. The flower petals are what is termed an "aerophane/gauze" and the other little flowers and leaves are silk floss. The box measures 3 and 7/8" long by 2.5" wide by 0.5" thick (deep). It's in beautiful display condition; although there are a couple flaws. The bottom or base is slightly crushed. The wine silk foundation fabric has some fading and dark mottling. One petal has lifted (I have fabric glue so let me know if you'd like it fixed). Lastly the original button (possibly a silk crochet ball) was missing. I had this antique brass button that I sewed on, that I felt complimented the piece. Be sure to expand the pictures for examination. I have displayed this gem in my smoke-free home, away from direct sunlight, behind glass. Many thanks for looking!
