Description: This unusual piece is a block of stone used to print a lithography handbill. The type and images are REVERSED for printing, as in the main image -- see second set of images to read it as it would have been once printed. The type of ship suggests that this was from the early nineteenth century. The text at first glance appears to be in praise of Christian missionaries traveling to Africa. But the text and illustrations reveal this to be satire. Missionaries are mocked as hypocrites for traveling on a ship loaded with alcohol, destined for sale in Africa. The overall message seems to support temperance and abolition, through the critique of the trade in alcohol and reference to "our traffic." The stone is glued into a wooden case. It weighs about thirty five pounds. Its outside dimensions are 11 x 14.5 x 3.25 inches. The surface of the image has some stains and scratches. Please see photos for details, measurements and condition.
