Description: Map of Great Britain and Ireland by Petrus Bertius printed 1618 Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Later hand colouring Pieter Bertius (1565- 1629 known as 'Petrus') grew up in Beveren in Flanders and as a young man travelled widely in Europe. He moved to Amsterdam as a refugee religious persecution and attended Leyden University. He was appointed professor of mathematics at Leyden University and became a prolific writer on mathematics, theology and history. He was related by marriage to cartographers Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van de Keere and after 1600 developed an interest in cartography and mapmaking. In 1618 he moved to Paris and became Official Cosmographer to Louis XIII. This map is from his miniature atlas 'Petri Bertij Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum' published in 1618.Page size is 20cm x 13cm.
