Description: Up for auction is an awesome medallion or medal that was made by Whitehead & Hoag. Whitehead and Hoag began in business in 1892 in Newark, N.J. I perused the internet and could not find a medallion totally like this one. I believe it is special. The bottom circle on the right represents Missouri and the date under the motif is 1820. The circle above center, possibly represents Kansas, and I am pretty sure the bottom left hand side represents Nebraska. I believe the 1820 reference is to the Missouri Compromise of 1820. It had to do with the area known as the Louisiana Purchase. It was a law that allowed Missouri into the Union as a state that allowed slavery. It was in effect until it was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This all had an impact on the slavery issue and was a forerunner of the Civil War. I don't know why this medallion was struck but it probably was a commemorative of some sort. It may have had a ribbon. There is a small hole where it could be worn on a necklace or ribbon. This medallion is very intricate and each circle has minute figures which I cannot make out. The medallion measures 1 5/8" in diameter. Check out my other interesting and eclectic items.
