Description: Unusual and rare painting from a 1940's visitor to Turkey who documented this important and popular Ottoman historical site.Fascinating antique realist oil on artist board painting of the Rumeli Hisari, an important 15th Century Ottoman Castle on the Bosphorus The artist board has information on the back identifying its Turkish origin.Framed in a period gilt wood frame with gesso detailing and a matte gold finish 9" wide x 8" tall Signed by the artist, "H. Raymond" in lower right corner. The style is English, and the artist may have been a diplomat or commercial traveler. The castle shown is the Rumeli Hisari, erected in 1451-1452 on the orders of Sultan Mehmet II. It was built as part of the campaign by the Ottomans to lay siege to Byzantine Constantinople by preventing relief from sailing up the Bosphorus. Sultan Mehmet went on to conquer the city in 1453The great 1.5 km Fatih Sultan Mehmet suspension bridge, named after the victorious Sultan, spans the Bosphorus in the background of the modern last pictureGood antique condition overall. Oil paint on Turkish artist board. Due to age, some surface grime and wear, with some soil as shown. Could be professionally cleaned, but ready to display. No cuts, serious damage or staining.
