Description: Long narrow-bladed U.S. made Ames sword.. Dbl-edged rapier-style blade, Engraved "Chicopee MA" Note: Blade is approx.32" long. Comment contributed by Fredric_3334: " it is a Us 1840 nco(non commissioned officers) blade used for sergeants(no military school soldiers who got promoted), musicians, flag bearers, and other low ranking military personnel. it is not a rapier, but a evolution of a smallsword called the spadroon. smallswords were a french invention similar to a rapier but much shorter and lighter meant to stab only. spadroon is the smallsword given a poor edge to cut with for military use. rapiers averaged around 40 in blade (not including hilt) while spadroons and small swords are around 28-32 in and much lighter and faster. as it is not dated, it is probably pre civil war. i have seen m1840's from ames dated in the 1860's. at the absolute max of the spectrum it is only 20 years older then the civil war (probably less) and may have kicked around long enough to see use.
