Description: This is an Antique 1870s Victorian Scottish Sterling Cairngorn Citrine & Agate Lavaliere Style Brooch.Among these items are quite a variety of hallmarked sterling and gold pieces. At the time of the original listing for this brooch, we also had a number listings for other Scottish brooches with several traditional Scottish stones and motifs including thistle, a stag, and a dirk in our ebay store. Several are sterling, and one has a full set of Scottish sterling hallmarks. We also have a variety of antique and vintage jewelry include gold and sterling pieces, including hallmarked pieces from England, Scotland, and Mexico, as well as signed US pieces including Native American and Southwest pieces, European and Asian pieces, and designer signed vintage costume jewelry.I found the following background information on Cairngorm Citrine online: "Cairngorm is the name given to a citrine quartz variety with an amber or brown color traditionally mined in the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. During the Victorian period cairngorms were extensively used in traditional Scottish jewelry such as kilt ornaments, bonnet brooches or carved thistle shapes." This is a 1 1/2" annular Scottish brooch. The photos are closeups; you can see the size relative to a US dime in one of the photos. The brooch weighs 15.86 grams as seen on our jewelry scale and it has a nice heavy feel. The brooch is not marked. The information we received from the seller is that the brooch is circa 1870s. The identification regarding the materials and stones were also provided by the seller. We have been buying jewelry from her for a number of years. I believe all of the information is accurate and we will guarantee your satisfaction with your purchase. I the brooch as additional confirmation that it is sterling silver. The brooch has a non-locking C clasp, consistent with the construction of Victorian jewelry. The brooch is sterling silver, set with a large 10 MM round-cut prong set cairngorm citrine gemstone, surrounded by six prong set 6 MM citrine gemstones of foil backed paste. The border is is decorated with six polished agate stones, indigenous to Scotland, in a variety of colors that greatly enhance the appeal of this striking brooch. I believe these include red jasper and moss agate, as well as several others that I cannot specifically identify. The design of the brooch incorporates traditional Scottish motifs. The 10 MM prong set citrine center stone and the six surrounding foil backed paste stones represent the flowering heads of thistle plants. Each of the six thistle flower stones, has a deeply chased design with the leafs and prickles below the flower, completing the thistle motif. In addition to the thistle leaves, the outer edge also has a chased design. I found the following information regarding the symbolism of Scottish thistle online:"The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286). Throughout Celtic regions thistle represents bravery, devotion, durability, strength and determination."Additional information on the history, symbolism, designs, and materials for Scottish jewerly can be easily found in a wealth of online articles. The brooch also has a chain and pin in a Lavaliere Style. The chain can simply be draped in an arc and pinned to the garment, or a small charm, perhaps with additional Scottish symbolism could be added to the chain with a jump ring. This lovely antique brooch, with its traditional Scottish heritage, would be a wonderful addition to your jewelry collection, and it would also also make a great, unique gift, especially for someone of Scottish descent.
