Description: The color is pale blue. It's not quite as dark or saturated as it appears in the pictures. Pale blue solid jasper was produced from 1775 until c.1820. The image of Venus and Eros first appeared on Wedgwood items in 1773. I'm basing the production date on a similar piece in the Wedgwood Museum - an identically shaped bottle with identical mythological images but with different ornamentation. The bottle is 2 1/2" tall, 2" in diameter, pale blue, yellow metal mount, decorated centrally with neoclassical mythological scenes, and further ornamented with a floral motif, an elaborate braided divider, and a dragon collar. One side's image depicts Venus with an infant Eros grasping at the Flower of Fertility. This image is reportedly known as "Night" and based on an engraving by Bernard de Montfaucon. The Wedgwood museum describes the other image as a "warrior contemplating a helmet" but I like to think that it's Bacchus, considering he appears to be holding a thyrsus - "a wand or staff of giant fennel covered with ivy vines and leaves, sometimes wound with taeniae and always topped with a pine cone." This is a symbol commonly associated with Bacchus. If you look closely, you can see that the oval at the 4 o'clock position has a tiny bit of substance missing from its edge. There's a chip on the bottom (picture #7) from the raised rim of the actual blue bottle. The amount missing is the equivalent of a few grains of sand. There's some fine crazing in the collar and on one side of the bottle. Lastly, there are a few areas where some sort of debris has become impacted in one of the little spaces where such things can occur. All of these issues are easily visible in the photos.
