Description: White sagebrush, or silver wormwood, is a species of sagebrush native to most of North America. It can be grown in almost every U.S. state. This wind-pollinated, wind distributed perennial herb is closely related to other sagebrushes. Like them, it possesses gorgeous silvery-blue foliage and minute yellow flowers on tall inflorescences in the late summer/early fall. The fragrance of the foliage can be enjoyed year-round and even used for sage-smudging. The plant sprouts and spreads from underground rhizomes and can be quite aggressive, covering areas of up to three to four square feet. It will be less aggressive without irrigation. White sage will also thrive in dry conditions, with pretty much no irrigation needed making it a perfect accent plant for the western xeriscape or rock garden.
