The P-51, a single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft, was designed by North American Aviation for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and later adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF). It is considered the finest all-around piston-engined fighter of World War II. The P-51 originated from a 1940 proposal by North American Aviation's chief designer, J.H. Kindelberger. Named Mustang by the British, it featured a low-drag laminar-flow wing and efficient engine cooling, giving it exceptional speed and range. The Mustang first flew in October 1940, entered production in May 1941, and began combat with the RAF in April 1942. Merlin-powered P-51s, with jettisonable drop tanks, had a range of over 1,600 miles (2,500 km) and began long-range bomber escort missions over Germany in December 1943. They quickly dominated Germany’s Me 109 and Fw 190 fighters, especially above 20,000 feet (6,000 meters). By March 1944, P-51s, along with P-47 Thunderbolts and P-38s, significantly reduced U.S. bomber losses. The P-51D, the most produced version, had a Plexiglas canopy, a top speed of 440 mph (700 km/h), an operating ceiling of nearly 42,000 feet (12,800 meters), and was armed with six 0.50-inch (12.7-mm) machine guns. It could also carry bombs or rockets for close air support.
