Description: A lovely, hand made Asafo flag ( Asafo frankaa ) from Ghana portraying a nice combination of colours, made from a lovely textile (please view images closely) A very large flag From the Early 80's Fairly used with a few minor stains . These flags are visual representations of military organisations in Fante communities known as "Asafo". The Asafo or "companies" each have their own flag name and number. Every flag has a message /story to tell from the images displayed on the flag. This flags displays a bird killing a snake, this relates to the proverb; " without the head, the snake is nothing but rope" This proverb stresses the importance of leadership in the community. This is nicely sewn flag, with detailed hand stitching of the characters onto the flag. If you look closely at the images, you will notice the sky blue textiles has patterns on it, seems to be some sort of patterned satin textile. The Flags were used during the installation of a new Asafo Captain , during festivals , funerals of a companies member and during other traditional events.
