Description: {Description}Asafo Flag Frankaa with Appliqué Ghana 58x45 Inch Sidley Collection These creative flags, known as "frankaa," symbolize divisions within the Fante people's Asafo Companies along the coast of Ghana. Asafo Companies, dating back to the 15th century, once had genuine military roles, serving various purposes until the end of British occupation in 1957. Coastal Fante towns typically hosted at least one company, with larger towns possibly having up to ten, leading to rivalries and conflicts depicted on the flags. Politically engaged in chief selection and religiously aligned with specific military shrines, each company had a unique name, number, and set of symbols on their flags. Asafo flags not only identify the carrying company but also portray proverbs, events, or relationships through imaginative cutout figures on cotton rectangles. The rough dating system involves the presence of the British ensign on pre-independence flags, with those featuring the Ghanaian ensign indicating post-1957 origins. We do not recommend laundering textiles and do not accept returns of textiles that have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing (NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Provenance: Niña Sidley Collection After a long career in publishing, Niña Sidley returned to her first love: collecting the art, artifacts, and textiles of the world’s indigenous peoples. Part of her mission has been to educate others and to honor the extraordinary creativity, ingenuity, and heartfelt messages these handmade works send from their makers. Niña believes this deep respect for tradition and beauty inspires and ties all of us together as one world. Length (in): 58.0Width (in): 45.0 149739 149739 × Buy now and save!
