Description: Augustus Lugdunum AR Denarius RIC 207 HIGH GRADE LUSTROUS Heres a beautiful coin. Augustus Lugdunum AR Denarius. Obverse Augustus facing right, reverse Gaius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, each togate and resting hand on shield; behind each shield, a spear. RIC 207. This is one of, if not the most common denarii of Augustus, which led to the belief of this possibly being the Tribute Penny in the Bible. "'Whose is this image and superscription?' When answered that the likeness was Caesar, He replied; ''Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:20-21). Since Tiberius was the Caesar at the time of Jesus' death, the denarius of Tiberius is traditionally believed to be the Tribute Penny, but the Augustus Lugdunum denarius is sometimes referred to as the Alternate Tribute Penny, as coins of Augustus were still circulating at the time. Normally seen in low grades, our example is lustrous, has a great strike, great surfaces, and a lot of detail. A truly beautiful example of the type! Some comps attached (one much lower grade). We have never seen one with this much luster in person before. This is a very desirable coin, which is available for sale
