Description: Aynsley Doris Handle Cup & Saucer Hand Painted Blue Flowers Red w/Gold 1934-1939 Aynsley Doris Handle Cup & Saucer 1934-1939 Hand Painted Blue Flowers Red w/Gold A beautiful AYNSLEY Fine Bone China Footed DORIS HANDLED CUP & SAUCER, Striking GOLD SCROLLWORK on Deep RED Band with Hand Painted BLUE FLOWERS w/Yellow Centers on Cream, GOLD Trim, Circa 1934-1939 from Staffordshire, England           DESCRIPTION:  This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid.  This is painted on a blank of high white fine bone china with gold trim on the edges. The cup & saucer are tied together by the use of same pattern with the gold trim.  The gold leaves that adorn the hand painted flowers and trail towards the center is an interesting touch.           CONDITION:  While this set is classified as used, we can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs.  There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing.  Look in the photos to see this.  The lack of utensil scratches attests to the high quality of the bone china.  There is no wear to any of the gold trim.  Both pieces are beautiful and classically decorated. DIMENSIONS:  The saucer  has a diameter of 5 1/2" and a height of 7/8".  The footed cup has a diameter of 3 13/16" and stands 2 1/8" high with the top of the handle being 2 9/16". HISTORY/MARKS:  John Aynsley established his pottery in Longton, England in 1775 using local Staffordshire clay and elaborate designs.   The company prospered, but his grandson, John Aynsley II, changed the focus of the business from pottery to fine bone china by adding 50% calcined bone ash to his porcelain compound.  This produced a fine bone china that was exceptionally white, extremely strong and translucent.  In 1861, he opened the Portland Works in Stoke-on-Trent to produce the many unique Aynsley designs that were becoming exceedingly popular.  Queen Victoria commissioned Aynsley China to produce a full service for her personal use.  This allowed the company to use the royal family seal in its logo, therefore, affirming the company’s reputation.  The company remained in the ownership of the Aynsley family until becoming a publically listed company in 1948, still under the leadership of the Aynsley family.  In 1970, the company was taken over by Waterford and by 1997 it became a part of the Belleek Pottery Group.   Today Aynsley China, Ltd. is still known for craftsmanship and fine production techniques.  The mark on this is identified as used in the 1934-1939 time period.
