Description: Bear's Breeches, Acanthus mollis, Perennial Seeds Acanthus mollis is a big and bold plant. It has some of the finest foliage in the plant kingdom. Acanthus mollis is a clump-forming perennial that is grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold flower spikes. It is native to the Mediterranean region. Deeply lobed, glossy dark green leaves to 2 feet long form a mound of basal foliage. Each lobe is tipped with a soft (not sharp) spine. In late summer, Acanthus mollis blooms with creamy white to slightly pink or purplish snapdragon-like flowers, each hooded and subtended by reddish-purple bracts on dramatically tall, erect stalks held way above the foliage 3 to 5 feet tall. In hot summer areas, Acanthus mollis dies back to the ground during summer only to return when the weather cools off. With milder winters, the leaves stay present through most of the year. Acanthus stands out in a bed of ferns or hostas, providing contrast with its darker color, greater size and complex texture. It is a stately specimen in a courtyard garden. Acanthus leaves have a classical appearance and were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. It is believed that the leaves of Acanthus mollis or Acanthus spinosis were the model for the sculptured leaves that adorn the capitals of the Corinthian columns that became popular in the 4th century B.C. Genus name comes from the Greek word for spine (akantha) in reference to the toothed edges on leaves in some species. There appears to be no scholarly agreement among authorities on the origin and meaning of the term bear’s breeches. Plants tolerate a wide range of soils except poorly-drained ones. Plants may not flower well in too much shade. Late spring frosts can impair or eliminate flowering for the year.Culture: Remove flowering stalks after bloom. In cold winter areas, plant foliage should be left in place over winter but removed in early spring as new foliage appears. Plants can spread aggressively by creeping rootstocks, particularly in loose soils. Unwanted spread can be addressed by root barriers. Plants generally spread less in the northern parts of their growing range.Uses: Bold, stately plants that may be grown as specimens but are perhaps best in small groupings. Borders or formal gardens.
