Description: This is a beautiful, fully polished piece of Burmite (Burmese) amber that contains a very rare swarm of around 20 flies from the Cretaceous Period. With the flies is a bivalve seashell.The amber itself has a deep cherry red color.Bivalves are sometimes associated with Burmite amber and usually represent the burrowing of a bivalve after the resin has fossilized into amber and under seawaterThe insects were alive at a time when dinosaurs including T-Rex and Triceratops still walked the Earth!The piece itself weighs 2.4 grams with approximate dimensions of 2.9 cm length by 1.5 cm width and 0.5 cm height. This piece is genuine amber formed over millions of years of polymerization.Burmese (Burmite) amber is difficult to acquire and has been dated to be Cretaceous in age (around 100 million years old) and would have been sticky resin during the time of the dinosaurs. However, many amber sources or even specimens will not float in saltwater as their botanical (plant) composition as well as fossil inclusions are such that they are more dense than saltwater and so sink.
