Benjamin Butler, a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts and a major general during the American Civil War, has contributed a black ink signature to this railroad ticket. Butler has signed the ticket in his capacity as a manager for the Asylum of Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, a series of care homes across the United States that provided care for volunteer soldiers that were injured or stricken ill during the Civil War. The ticket serves as a coupon distributed by the A.D.V.S. (and paid for by the US Treasury) that allowed the passenger to pay a half-priced fare. After a failed siege of Fort Fisher in the Civil War, Butler was relieved of his duties in the Union Army and was shortly thereafter elected to the United States House of Representatives. In that capacity, he fought for harsher punishments for Confederate political and military figures and was one of the leading advocates for impeaching Andrew Johnson. The ticket displays an uneven perimeter, as well as a hole punch (perhaps performed by a railroad employee).
