Description: Big and Beautiful Early Gumnut Vase by Joan Sayers c.1986 Highly detailed large handmade vase with applied gumnuts and gum tree branches with six Gumnut Babies tucked away in three nests. Fully incised Makers Mark to the base: ‘Hand Made Sayers Australia’ This could well be one of the earliest Gumnut pieces as it is signed by Joan Sayers. Measures: 27cm high by approximately 15cm diameter at the widest. (10 5/8in x 5 7/8in). Weight: 1601g. CONDITION: In beautiful but poor condition as it has had a large bite taken out of the back which has been crudely reglued. At least I think it’s crude even though it’s not all that evident. A good restorer will remove the excess glue and make the repair invisible without much effort or cost. Also there are two small chips that I can see to the decoration, please view in my photos. Postage includes full insurance. History: John Garrett (1915-1984) emigrated to Australia from England with his wife Phyllis in 1950. He had studied art before the war. 1n 1959, after taking classes, then teaching, at the Auburn Technical College, he and Phyllis set up a studio at their home in South Granville, NSW, and started making pottery incised ‘Hand made Garrett N.S.W.’ Their daughter Joan Sayers (1944- ) joined them in 1963, signing her work ‘J. Sayers’ or ‘Sayers’. In 1977 she started producing wares incised ‘Hand made Sayers Australia’. In 1980 the family moved to Queensland, where Joan set up the Redland Bay Pottery, helped by her parents and her children Mark and Katrina. John died in 1984, but Phyllis continued to help with decoration until the pottery closed in 1998. The popular gumnut range was first made in 1986. Work from the Queensland period may be incised ‘Redland Bay Pottery J Sayers’ Katrina incised her work ‘Hand made K Sayers Australia’. In 1995 she made a range incised ‘Australianaware Sayers Hand made’. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~2708~~~~~~~~~~~~ We guarantee our descriptions are accurate and our prices competitive.
