The region is located just off NM Route 371 about an hour south of Farmington and 90 miles north of I-40. The Old Bisti Trading Post is no longer open. It was not until recently that this area was recognized as a Regional Navajo Rug style. Previously the rug designs were thought to be a variation of the Teec Nos Pos designs. The Bisti rugs were woven by four extended Navajo families located in the area. The Bisti Navajo Rugs are the rarest of the Regional Rug designs. Characteristics of the Bisti weavings are: design geometry, the presence of yarn dyed with wild carrot, Aniline (red dyes), numerous borders surrounding a center field, sometimes up to nine borders and pictorial motifs. All bringing a definite Oriental influence to the design. The earliest examples of Bisti rug style go back to the early 1900s, when the Navajo rugs were in transition from blankets to rugs. These early rugs were traded mainly to the Burnham family at the Bisti and Burnham Trading Posts, additionally some were traded in Shiprock, Farmington, Durango, Pagosa Springs and other areas in southern Colorado. While there are no weavers producing a distinct Bisti style rug today, there are a few out there which can still be viewed. This pattern was adapted to counted cross stitch or needlepoint. The pattern is 176 x 260 stitches, using 14 ct Aida cloth the design size is 13.5 x 16 inches, but if you are purchasing material you must add 3 inches around to design size (17 x 22 inches will be needed).
