Description: This lovely antique brooch features a left-facing lava portrait of a woman in an earthy taupe color. ("Lava" in this context does not mean dried molten lava, but is a mixture of limestone and volcanic particles called "pyrocastics".) With its c-catch, tube hinge and extended pin stem, this cameo likely was crafted during the early Victorian era. The high-profile cameo is ornately carved and well-defined. The fact that the subject of the cameo is a beautiful woman adds to its appeal. The case has a lovely braided design that is more gold in color than the rest of the case, but I have not tested either metal. It is significant size-wise, measuring about 1.875" long and 1.5" wide. As depicted on the photos, the face has a tiny flea bite on the upper cheek, but this is unsurprising given the age of the brooch and the softness of the lava and does not affect wear.
