Description: Scarce stereoview of an African American (or possibly Mexican) woman seated under the Mammoth Grape Vine (La Vina Grande) of Santa Barbara, California. Produced by the Centennial Photographic Co. for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. C. 1876. 4.25” x 7”. In good condition, with light rubbing and wear to exterior, primarily along edges and corners. Small chip and loss to right side of left-hand image. Photographs remain in good condition and easy to view. Light pencil markings to rear. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Planted in approximately 1840, the vine was considered one of the largest in the United States and was a local tourist and cultural sensation. Another massive century-old vine from the area had been removed near the end of its lifespan and shipped to Philadelphia for the Centennial Exhibition, where it became a popular fixture to visitors.
