c1880 - THE POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM WORDSWORTH Antiquarian ILLUSTRATED Book

Description: c1880 - THE POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM WORDSWORTH Antiquarian ILLUSTRATED Book c1880 – THE POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM WORDSWORTH Antiquarian ILLUSTRATED Hardback Book in a really good condition for its age – Part of ‘The Arundel Poets’. With a stunning and ornate DECORATIVE cloth binding, all edge gilt pages, yellow pastedowns and endpapers, a memoir, explanatory Notes, frontispiece portrait in steel (with a protective sheet, which is a little loose) and ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS. It contains 12 plates and the frontispiece. The plates are facing pages 22, 77, 94, 149, 190, 208, 262, 288, 339, 409, 432, and 540. Published by Frederick Warne And Co., Bedford Street, Strand, London and printed by Ballantyne Press, Ballantyne And Hanson, Edinburgh and Chandos Street, London. This book is not dated; however, I believe it to date to between 1865 and 1880. The publisher, Frederick Warne, was founded in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London in 1865 and so the book must date to after this. On the ‘Publisher’s Preface’ of this book is a pen inscription which is dated “Xmas 1880’ and so the book must date to 1880 or earlier. I believe, therefore that this book dates between 1865 and 1880. This stunning collection of Wordsworth’s poems is extensive and includes the following: Juvenile Poems; Poems Referring to the Period of Childhood; Poems founded on the Affections; Poems of the Fancy; Poems of the Imagination; Miscellaneous Sonnets; Memorials of a Tour in Scotland 1803; Memorials of a Tour in Scotland 1814; Poems on Naming of Places; Inscriptions; Sonnets Dedicated to Liberty; Memorials of a Tour on the Continent 1820; Ecclesiastical Sketches: Part I; Part II; Part III; The River Duddon - A Series of Sonnets; Poems of Sentiment and Reflection; Poems Referring to the Period of Old Age; Epitaphs and Elegiac Poems; The Excursion; Poems Composed during a tour in Scotland and on the English Border, in the Autumn of 1831; Appendix.William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was an English poet who, along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, played a crucial role in the development of English Romanticism, a literary movement that emphasised individuality, imagination, and a deep connection with nature. Wordsworth's poetry is known for its lyrical and introspective nature, exploring themes of memory, childhood, and the sublime beauty of the natural world. This is bound in the publisher’s original green cloth, over boards, ornately decorated in gilt and black illustrations and lettering on the front board and spine. The cover is intact, robust and in a very good condition for a book which is over 140 years old. There is just light wear and very soft bumping to the corners, and a few small marks. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. There is darker tanning on one of the preliminary pages and on page 15, but this does not obscure the text. There is light foxing on the pastedowns, endpapers, some of the preliminary pages, and on the last few pages. Besides this, the pages are in an overall clean and neat state, and uncreased. There is only the very occasional very small mark, which does not affect the text. There are no rips to the pages, In addition to the pen inscription (afore mentioned) on the ‘Publisher’s Preface”, there is also a small pen inscription on the front free endpaper. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written in this book. The pages are mostly tightly bound, and there is just an extremely light crack in the gutter between pages 368 and 369. This is minimal and all of the pages are secure. Please see the photograph provided. Besides the partially loose protective sheet, which covers and protects the frontispiece, there are no loose or missing pages, and all 606 pages are present, plus 2 pages containing the publisher’s catalogue. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 20.2 cm by 15.4 cm and 4.4 cm wide. It weighs approximately 1,020 grams. This really is a beautiful and historically valuable find. Thank you for looking.
