Votive measures approx 7 inhes x 4 inches. A Genuine of the period medieval cast bronze votive tablet. Comes from an old south German collection. This is the popular depiction known as the Buddha Shakyamuni or 'The Enlightened one of the Shakya Clan' descending from the Brahmic heaven of Tavatimsa. see below In addition to the four key life events of the Buddha -- Birth, Enlightenment, First Sermon, and Death -- a group of four secondary events became extremely important and the locations at which these events took place became key pilgrimage centers. The second of the secondary events took place in Sankashya, in Uttar Pradesh, India. This event was the Buddha's Descent from the Trayastrimsha Heaven, the heaven of the thirty-three Brahmanic Gods. The Descent occured after the Buddha went to Trayastrimsha Heaven to preach to his deceased mother, who had been reborn there as a god. The gods Indra and Brahma decided to accompany the Buddha on his return to the human realm. To facilitate this, Indra caused a set of three stairways to appear. The first stairway was for Indra and his entourage and was made of gold. The second was for Brahma and his entourage and was made of silver. The third, central, staircase of precious gems was for the Buddha. The notion that Shakyamuni was attended by these Brahmanical gods reiterates the importance of Shakyamuni and of Buddhism in light of the Brahmanical religion. Another aspect of the story of the Buddha's descent is significant. A nun, Utpali, had vowed to be the first to see the Buddha upon his return from Trayastrimsha. A large crowd assembled to witness the Descent, with great princes occupying the front, at the foot of the stairs. Because Utpali was a lowly mendicant woman she was relegated to the rear of the assembly and would, therefore, not be able the first to see the Buddha as he made his Descent. However, the Buddha, aware of Utpali's vow and meritorious past lives, transformed her into a chakravartin, or universal monarch. Accompanied by the largest entourage, the transformed Utpali was given her rightful place in front of the crowd from where she fulfilled her vow. At the moment she saw the Buddha, she transformed back into her simple status as the nun Utpali. Then, the Buddha gave her the prediction of her future enlightenment. This story decisively indicates the non-discriminatory nature of Buddhist attainment. Neither gender nor class determines religious advancement. The Utpali narrative is depicted in art at a very early date. See the pics Postage inside ireland is 1£'s See My other Listings Images sell!
