They are a thicker, more flexible plastic, and consequently are not prone to freeze and bust like all of the imported water cups that I have purchased from Randall Burkey, Belle Farms, Cutlers, Jeffers, etc. in the past. (For ice removal & to prevent breaking, it is best to fill only 1/3 to 1/2 full in the winter.) The advantages I see to the hanging water cups is that they stay cleaner because my chickens aren't as prone to kick dirt in them and earth worms don't crawl into them and die. Water & Feed bowls sitting on the ground can also become a home for vermin & insects. I have a lot of movable pens that I try to keep on fresh grass, and it is a lot easier if the cup is hanging on the pen. Fresh Clean Water = Healthy, Hydrated, Happy animals. You probably already have a piece of fencing or welded wire laying around. The shift lock design keeps them from being accidentally knocked off, & these work better & are more secure than anything that I know of that goes on a pegboard.
