In 1954, Canada issued a one-dollar banknote that became famous for its intriguing feature known as the “Devil’s Face.” Here’s the story behind it: 1. The Illusion: Shortly after these banknotes entered circulation, people noticed that certain highlighted portions of Queen Elizabeth II’s hair created the illusion of a devil’s face peering out from behind her ear. This was not an error or a prank; it was simply a faithful reproduction of the original photograph used as the model. 2. The Design: Obverse (Front): The banknote features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II based on a Karsh photograph. The portrait was moved to the right to prevent wear from folding. Reverse (Back): In the middle, there’s a view of a cloud-laden prairie near Fleming, Saskatchewan, with the legendary “Trans-Canada” road. The background color of the banknote is green. 3. Modifications: The Bank of Canada had both banknote companies modify the face plates by darkening the highlights in the Queen’s hair to reduce the devilish appearance. Replacement notes were also issued to replace damaged or destroyed ones before they entered circulation. So, the 1954 Canadian one-dollar bill with the Devil’s Face remains a fascinating piece of numismatic history! This is a great piece of Canadian paper money history. A must have for any die-hard Canadian note enthusiast. $1 Shipping - I DO NOT Ship to Canada
